Grahams Race Report:
First XV dominate the racing at Malton!
Fifteen of our club paddlers travelled to Malton for their annual Hasler Marathon race. This race is always a bit different as the course is along a fast flowing river with many turns and overhanging branches to negotiate. This year the difficulty was compounded by strong gusty winds.
The Division 5 (8 mile) race was easily won by Charles with Connor in second place. Karl, in his first 8 mile race, took third spot.
Division 6 (8 miles) was won by Louie (maybe he will be promoted this time) despite his failing to turn at the motorway bridge. Alfie came second despite a swim and Graham followed in distant third place despite swimming within the first mile.
Craig won Division 7 having wash-hung behind Martin for most of their 4 miles (Excellent tactics Craig). Andrew swam before getting to the start but got back in to finish third.
Matilda dominated Division 8 and us older paddlers will soon be watching the tail of her boat as she disappears into the distance.
Phil won Division 9 (again) and Mike brought up the rear (again with a swim).
Sue and Helen were our only entrant in Div 8 doubles and put in a great team effort to keep up with other Div 8 paddlers and pass the doubles boat in Div 7.
Declan was our sole entrant in the Geoff Sanders junior race which he comfortably won.
Well done to all our paddlers! The drama didn’t end with the racing – Sue and Graham towing the trailer full of boats were refused access to the Humber Bridge because of the high winds and had to take a long detour via Goole. There are often hidden costs in taking teams to events and we are very grateful for the donations paddlers made to the cost of transporting their boats.

Late breaking news!!!!!!
Phil Smith WAS promoted after the Lincoln race but it had not been ratified until after I submitted the entries for Malton so he raced in Div 9. Congrats Phil – you are now DIV 8 but even that may only be until the Malton results have been ratified given you time.
