Yorkshire League Canoe Polo 22 September
By Mikey Thornber:On Saturday 22-09-18, our Polo Team, G&S Stingrays, played their first tournament of the season at KKC’s venue in Hull. The team were Dan Finch, James Finch, Sian Mitchell, Julian Selby, Owen Kelly, Wayne Thomas, Ian Parkin and Mikey Thornber.
Unfortunately, due to work commitments the team have been unable to train together at all so this was a first for them all!
Embracing the 7 degrees land temperature, playing in an un-heated outdoor pool the Stingrays took to the water for their first game. The first game was played against Northumbria A team, who were the Division 3 winners last season, with our team coming second. During this first game the team worked well together, keeping the opposition out and away from their goal. Unfortunately, the lack of practice for our team showed through leaving them with a 1-0 loss.
Their second game of the Tournament was against Manvers. Again, the opposing team was a lot better prepared for the season. Showing a heavy attacking side, however our team stood together well, switching around their defense tactics trying to find the best way to hold them off. However, they lost this game 4-0.
Their third game was against Kingston D, the team playing in their home venue, and a team that worked very, very well together. The Stingrays held up well in the first half, going 1-0 up from a great goal from Ian. However, Kingston equalised just before half time. Swapping sides, and jumping straight back into action, Stingrays lack of energy showing through as Kingston push to an unfortunate 8-1 win over our team.
However, a last-minute twist in the luck for our polo team when they started their final game against Leeds Panthers. Sprinting at the start of the game the stingrays got off to a flying start with Mikey scoring a goal from the half-way line! Next came the scorcher from Wayne taking them to a 2-0 lead. Just before half-time Leeds panthers came back bringing the score to 2-2. All fired up from the first half the Stingrays wanted to make the most of the second half of the game with Daniel Finch scoring a goal in his debut tournament. This was followed by another goal from Ian and Mikey as well, for a well-deserved 5-2 win.
The Stingrays next tournament is the 1st December at Yearsley Swimming Pool in York. Spectators are welcome and more than appreciated and anyone interested in polo speak to Julian or Mikey at the club and they will keep everyone informed with the polo news. |
