Wolfreton Marathon Results
After a fine days racing on the Derwent Sam and Jess have been promoted to Division 8 and Louie has finally gained his promotion to Div 5. Congratulations to all three of you. For the full results click here
As for club Hasler points, Malton got more points than us due to having a) one more paddler on the water and b) not having our wonderful Sam and Jess who did so well that they did not get points at all. Graham explains. “On the provisional results Sam and Jess have been promoted TWO divisions. The software assumes that such people are “RINGERS” and doesn’t give them any points. If the ranking officer decides they only warrant a one division promotion we (unfortunately) don’t get the points recalculated.”
Wolfreton Marathon: A Paddler’s Report
By Samual Yates, GSCC div9
A very successful day out for GSCC at the Derwent Marathon Race. A super Sunday spectacle with four gold medals, 2 silver, 1 bronze and everyone staying dry.
Louie stormed to victory in division 6, with a possible promotion to division 5.
John had a storming first half of the race which cemented his position in second place division 7, he battled the home straight to return with a silver medal.
A close battle in division 8 left Andrew a couple of seconds out of the medals, but all to race for next time with some very close times.
In a rather large division 9 field, with two start lines, all podium positions were occupied by GSCC paddlers. The battle for first and second continued through out the race, with Sam keeping in touching distance from Jessica at the start with the lead changing hands on many occasions gave Sam the advantage going into the half way turn, only for Jessica to retake the lead after a well completed sharp turn, Sam retook the lead early in the second half and held off a strong finish from Jessica to claim first place. Hannah paddled very well and maintained her consistent form to complete the podium in third place, but couldn’t quite catch up with the leading two. Mike who set off in the second wave put in his best effort to catch the first wave, his strong paddle made it a GSCC top 4. Rebecca looked to be much more confident in her boat and has shown race on race improvement to finish in a respectable 7th place.
Helen and Sue put in their usual solid effort to collect a gold medal for their growing collection.
George added to his medal collection in the Geoff Saunders putting in a consistent effort and looking more comfortable racing.
Speaking to the GSCC roaming reporter, Louie said he was very pleased with his time and hoped it would result in a promotion so he could have a go at division 5. Sam said he was pleased to be dry after the last outing and reflected on the challenge Jess posed to motivate him through the race. Hannah was pleased to remain in her boat after being startled by a swan during which a scream could be heard by nearby competitors, but her composure wasn’t affected. It should be noted that the gang of paparazzi including Ken, Graham and Martin all provided much needed bankside support and many photos.
