Wolfreton Marathon – River Derwent- Report & Photos

Twelve of our marathon squad competed today in the first Hasler Marathon of the 2024/25 season, organised by Kingston Kayak club on the river Derwent at Barmby on the Marsh.

Though it was reasonably nice day with lightish winds, the conditions were very challenging due to fast flow from the recent rains. This caused all sorts of features like boils, eddy lines and waves, along with hidden underwater currents which suddenly moved you sideways. There was some good ferry gliding going on, though not intentional!

Despite this (it was the same for all competitors obviously!) we had no swimmers and all our paddlers went home with a medal of some description. Official results with times will be announced soon, but provisionally here’s a list of our paddlers successes.:

Div 5: 1st Charles; 2nd Connor
Div 6: 2nd Louie
Div 7: 2nd Martin
Div 8: 1st John
Div 9: 1st Oscar; 2nd Phil
Div 7 doubles; 1st Sue and Graham
Div 9 doubles: 2nd  Mike and Hazel*
Geoff Sanders: 1st Matilda
*Not sure about Div 9 doubles as we think the winning boat should have been Div 8
