First-aid
Four of our coaches refreshed their first aid qualifications this weekend, completing a 16 hour Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid. This has to be done every three years. The remainder of our coaches need to refresh next year.
Steve, Graham, Sue and Martin were joined by two of our trainee coaches, Owen and Jemima. Also on the course were two of our club members, Helen and Mary, and one paddleboard coach from Grimsby, who opted to fill spare spaces (and pay for themselves – the club currently support the continued development of coaches by paying such fees for them to remain qualified).
The course was held in and around our (cold!) boathouse and was run by Jim Milner of Wildnerness Ways. The course was a mixture of classroom and practical (with an exam to finish!) and was enjoyed by all. Both our trainees really enjoyed it and Jemima’s mum said, “…thanks for giving Jemima the opportunity. It’s so good to see her broadening her skills and building her confidence”
Here’s a few photos of our injuries and how we treated them!:

In the photo of Jemima, the paddler has lost control on a fast flowing river and a sharp broken tree branch has penetrated through the paddler’s chest cavity and lung causing a “sucking” chest wound. The plastic bag taped only on three side acts as a non-return valve and helps the lung re-inflate!
Louth Canal
At the moment this is NOT supported by the club (it is the same day as Malton Marathon), but that may change. But if you have your own kit and want to go then here’s what you need to know.

Marathon
It is marathon training this Tuesday and Saturday as usual.
UPCOMING RACES – Graham will be taking entries for Lincoln (18th May) this coming Tuesday and Saturday. He will need to know what boat, paddles etc each person wants – if numbers are high we may need to do some juggling. We don’t know cost yet.
Big Paddle Clean-up.
Once again we are supporting Paddle UK’s Big Paddle Cleanup where we pick the litter out of our river.
This year it is on Thursday 29th May and is instead of our normal river session. It’s the usual start time of 18:30 on the water. This is a free event, no fee is payable.
We’ll have all the canoes out so we can take our younger paddlers out. You can use kayaks too of course. All litter picking equipment is provided.
And this year everyone participating can log their findings and claim a £5 voucher redeemable at Decathlon.
