Brigg Marathon Report

GREAT DAY AT THE BRIGG RACE ON SUNDAY 24th MARCH

On Sunday we had our biggest turnout for a Hasler event for a long time. 48 paddlers in total (7 more than last October which itself was a record). 21 of our own club members plus 27 paddlers from 9 other clubs made for some exciting racing over 2, 4 and 8 miles. We also had one competitor who took on the challenge of the 12 mile race ON HIS OWN. You can view all our photos on the Facebook page or via the links sent out on email after the race.

We had an entertaining afternoon and many of the visitors let us know how much they enjoyed the day. As well as the racing we held our regular charity cake stall which raised £150 and Jean sold lots of teas, coffees and hot dogs to competitors and spectators as well as providing soup and roll for all paddlers. A great team of volunteers made sure that everything ran smoothly.

As well as the races we were entertained by one of our visitors who demonstrated how NOT to get in a boat at the start, and one of our own club members who demonstrated how not to get OUT at the finish!!! They will both vouch that the water is still cold.

All of our team gave 100% effort and we achieved some great results. Connor came 3rd in Division 6. We took all three medal positions in Div. 7 (Matthew left the competition for dead and Louie made a valiant, but failed, attempt to try and catch him). Lydia took the silver medal in Div. 8 only five seconds ahead of Andrew who took bronze. In Division 9, Phil gained second place whilst Hannah (one of our newer paddlers) came third in only her first race.

Our Geoff Sanders (junior) paddlers gave a good indication of the future talent we are developing – they all recorded times which would have put them in contention in the main 4 mile races.

Once again our club took top place in the Yorkshire and Humberside region and some of us have already booked our accommodation for the Hasler Finals on the Thames in October.

Provisional results are now available on the Marathon Racing website https://entries.canoemarathon.org.uk/results but I (Graham) have also had a sneak preview of the official results and can report that Ben has been promoted from Geoff Sanders B to Geoff Sanders A. Matthew is likely to be double promoted to Division 5. Louie “may” get promotion to Division 6 (both of these promotions are not definite but will be decided by the National Ranking Officer).

Our next local event is on Saturday 27th April. This will be a series of 200m and 500m sprints and will be open to all our club paddlers plus visitors from other clubs. Cake, drinks and other food will be available so come along and support the club even if you can’t paddle. Watch out for more details!

The next regional Hasler marathon is at Malton on May 19th but we also hope to take a squad down to Nottingham on April 21st.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came along.

Geoff Sanders update!

Congratulations to Ben on his promotion to Division A. At the start of the GS race on Sunday I overheard a visitor commenting how good the 4 paddlers action was. You all started off with a really good high stroke which continued as you paddled off into the distance. Well done to you all! Of course I turned round and said it showed how good the coaching was!!!!!!
