Hasler Marathon Finals

As said in a previous email, well done to all our paddlers who took part in the Hasler National Marathon Finals on the Thames at Richmond on Sunday 24th September.

Our best result was in the team Lightning class (under 12’s and 10’s) where we finished a creditable 6th out of 16 clubs, with Annabel Taylor finishing 6th out of 11 in the U10 girls. The older juniors and adults found the going tough against very strong competition, finishing 27th out of 34 clubs. If you are inspired to have a go at marathon racing, the qualifying rounds for next year’s Hasler start on Sunday October 1st, so this time next year you could be competing in the finals!

Pictured below on the banks of the Thames are Hannah, Julian, Tom, Nicole, Ellie, Rebecca, Caitlin, Annabel and team captain Neil. Missing (loading the van) is Jim.

Coaching Officer Neil Marley said: ” I am so proud of you all and what you have all achieved in such a short space of time. Bring on next year when we will be better prepared, a year wiser and with a years more training. Think what we can achieve!

Thank you all for putting in so much effort today and in all the training session that lead us all to be here today. Thanks also for the coaching time and effort put in by all the GSCC coaches that have coached you over the year, it has really paid off.

Well done to all of the GSCC marathon squad of 2017. Some of you couldn’t be here today but your Hasler points got this team here today and we had an amazing day”

Fancy Dress Torch-lit Paddle

Don’t forget to come in fancy dress for our last river session on Thursday 5th October. Bring a head torch and glow sticks, and don’t forget to decorate your boat too (you can tape battery or solar powered fairy lights to your boats). Please remember to add your name to the equipment list to reserve a boat. The list will be at the boathouse on Tuesday.  Priority for boats will be to those who have reserved one.

Last chance for tickets for the Fancy Dress BBQ

If you want BBQ food after the fancy dress paddle on Thursday 5th October you must pre-book a ticket. The deadline is Monday 2nd October and if you haven’t got yours yet please email Jean: treasurer@gscc-online.com

Pool Season Boat Cleaning Saturday 7th October – Help Wanted!

We need to deep clean all the boats and kit that we will be using in the pool for the winter pool sessions. We also need to tidy the boathouse after the summer season, and check all spraydecks, helmets etc, for damage. Volunteers helpers are welcome! If you can help, please meet at the boathouse at 9:00am (or anytime after).

Safety Cover for Ancholme Rowing Club

Once again we are providing safety cover for Ancholme Rowing Club’s big event “The Ancholme Head” on Sunday Oct 8th.

We are looking for people experienced and competent in an open canoe to volunteer to help us provide this safety cover. We will assist in marshaling and turning the competitors at the start, providing basic mechanical adjustments to their boats, and rescuing any capsizers.

There will be food provided at lunch time at the ARC boat house.

If you wish to help, please contact  Martin Heywood. Meeting times will be advised later.
