Our intrepid squad of marathon paddlers spent a great day at Malton on Sunday. The weather was warm but not too hot and the wind was light to moderate. The river was much lower than last year and although it still flows fast in places it was quite easy to navigate.
Our team had a very successful trip picking up medals (and club points) in all the divisions we contested.
Louie and Matilda in our brand new Trimmers had to fight off competition from some local juniors in the Geoff Sanders race but managed to secure first and second places respectively.
Alfie and Dave in Division 9 put in sterling performances. Alfie finished first only a couple of minutes behind the Division 7 paddlers and we will have to wait to see if he was fast enough to gain promotion. Dave had his first experience of marathon paddling on moving water and finished the race in third place having made sure that his boat and kit were well washed! Despite some stability problems he managed to keep smiling.
Connor and Charles paddled their first Division 7 K2 race alongside Sue and Graham. Charles and Connor had a flying start and Graham and Sue had to fight all the way to the half way turn to catch them. Connor and Charles then executed a near perfect turn (all that practice has been worth it) and built up a small lead which Sue and Graham were unable to close. They held on to the finish line beating Sue and Graham by 13 seconds. An excellent performance.
Finally Neil, our sole representative over 8 miles, fought hard to secure second place in Division 5.
The Malton results should secure our place at the top of the regional league table and give us the option of going to the Hasler Finals in the Autumn. Now we need to make sure that all those who want to take part have completed the necessary 3 events.
Our next regional race is on 19th June. As soon as the details are available we will be taking entries.
Graham – Disciplines Officer.
