Night Training.

This week Neil re-commences leading our night training. This will normally be every Tuesday, 6:30 pm ON THE WATER (so meet at 6:00 pm at the latest). However this Tuesday is Halloween and Neil needs to be away early so we will start half an hour earlier at 6:00 pm ON THE WATER (so meet at 5:30 pm at the latest). Neil will assess the conditions and deploy Steve and Martin as appropriate.

Because of Halloween, we are also running a Thursday session this week (2nd November), starting at the normal time of 6:30 pm ON THE WATER.

Initially this training will be on the stretch of water in front of the boathouse due to Neil’s thumb injury, but once he is fit to paddle, the training will then consist of a paddle around the Brigg Island.

Important: Please note that:

  • We must restrict the training to those who are capable of paddling solo or in a canoe pair around the island (3 miles) in under one hour. If you are unsure of your suitability for night training please contact Neil on coaching@gscc-online.com of post a message on our Facebook event page.
  • Paddlers must  have the appropriate clothing for the weather conditions.
  • Paddlers must be wearing a head torch.
  • We must also limit the number of boats to suit the number of coaches, which may only be Neil some weeks, so if possible please let Neil know that you intend to paddle on our Facebook Event page.
  • If the weather is too bad to paddle, or we do not have the correct coach-to-paddler ratio, we may do indoor training instead.
  • There will be a small charge to cover electricity usage.
  • Night training is subject to change or cancellation due to the weather or unavailability of the required coaches, so please “like” our facebook page to ensure you get the very latest news on any changes. Go to www.facebook.com/FriendsofGSCC. Members on our mailing list should also get late notifications, but it is not always possible to update the website at short notice.

Our new marathon boats and paddles arrived at our boathouse this morning and they look fantastic!

Neil and Steve were there to off-load them and store them on the re-positioned racks, and Martin arrived later to take some more pics.

At the moment, the boats are  just to look at!

The boats are not going to be used on the Tuesday or Thursday evening training sessions (more details about them soon) until the

club’s equipment policy and training packages are agreed and finalised by the committee.

This  is to ensure fair usage. This applies to everyone, including coaches, so no, we haven’t had a go in them today!

There are 8 boats in three different stability factors (10, 8 an 6, where 10 is marathon beginner and 1 is World Championship standard)

and they are in a specially designed colour scheme based on our club colours.

As can be seen below, Neil is rather excited!

Here is one outside in the daylight:

This shows their true colours:

and this is the other three:

We have three Tempests, stability 10
We have three Pulsars, stability 8
We have two Tors, stability 6

Can you make some kayak stands for us?

Our new racing boats will be here soon and we need to look after them. To stop the bottoms getting damaged they need supporting on pairs of folding stands when outside the boathouse like this:

Or this:

We can buy these below at £37 per pair, but we need at least 8 pairs. Thats nearly £300! More if we use them for the old boats too. These are good because the foam on the side doesn’t damage the boats:

Alternatively we can buy camping stools at £16 per pair like these from the Regatta Outdoors website, but that is still £128 and they don’t offer the foam protection that the ones above do.:

But can we make our own?

Here is a plastic design out of tube:

and here is a timber design: (It’s another camping stool actually, and it doesn’t need to be so elaborate!

If you think you can help and save the club some money, please get in touch with either Steve Burnett, Neil Marley or Martin Heywood.

Do you want to get involved in marathon racing?

We want to build on this years success so we need more U12′s (as our current U12′s have to move up to the adult divisions in 2018). We also welcome any new U10′s and any new over 12′s of course.

The Hasler series takes a winter break now, starting again in April with our own Brigg Marathon. The winter months make it difficult to introduce paddlers to marathon boats, but if we get any relatively mild weekends between now and April we hope to have some outdoor sessions, and as previously announced, we are having Tuesday evening sessions on the river during October.

If you or your children would like to try marathon racing (or slalom racing) please express an interest by emailing our coaching officer Neil Marley, at coaching@gscc-online.com or leave a comment on this message on our Facebook page and we will be in touch with dates for winter training.
