Ancholme River Festival

Saturday was the 4th annual Ancholme River Festival and we had a record 124 people trying kayak or canoe!

Special thanks to Alisha, Caitlin, Jamelia, Nicole (pictured below in front of our stand), Hannah and Mikey. They were brilliant all day distributing leaflets and helping people get sorted with kit and getting them on the water. Thanks also to out adult helpers Vicky, Donna, Janine, Alison and Kelly and to all the coaches, Iain, Neil, Steve, Martin, Garry, Zandra and Graham, but especially to Iain, Neil and Steve who coached all day without a break, that’s over 5 hours!! And finally thanks to all at the Ancholme Rowing Club for hosting the event and helping us out too during busy times (most of the day!).

Four of our young helpers: Alisha, Caitlin, Jamelia and Nicole. Missing from the photo are Hannah and Mikey.
Brigg Bomber Quadrathlon

On Sunday we provided safety cover for the swimming and kayaking sections of the Brigg Bomber Quadrathlon. For the open water swimming we provide the lead kayak, Caitlin, with Iain, Steve, Alisha & Nicole and Jameilia & Mikey in canoes and Neil and Dan on SUP. The SUPS paddled with the swimmers and Steve followed the last swimmer. The other placed themselves at regular intervals between our jetty and the railway bridge. Fortunately no one needed our help!

For the kayak section, Neil followed the last paddler.

Fun time!

It’s not all work and no play! As a reward for their hard work on both days, some of our helpers took advantage of the fine weather and had some well earned fun!

We have a really busy period coming up, starting this weekend:

Saturday 27th May: The Ancholme River Festival

We are running a try-it session with the Ancholme Rowing Club at their boathouse.

We will be needing volunteers to hand out leaflets, point people in the right direction, do registrations, man our stall etc etc. We particularly want some of our young paddlers to walk up and down the Market Place handing out leaflets and encouraging people to wander over to the Rowing club and have a go. If you can help, please contact Martin Heywood.

Please note the canoe/kayak sessions are not aimed at club members, though your non-paddling family members can come and have a go! You can try rowing, but no defections please!

Sunday 4th June: Our club Sprint & Slalom

Open to all club paddlers. A fun event with medals galore to be won, and you might end up Club Champion! More details soon.

Sunday 11th June: Derwent Marathon – Yorkshire Hasler Series Race 2

After race 1 at Morton GSCC are in a strong position. We need at least as many paddlers to attend this event to keep us near the top of the table. For more details. speak to Neil Marley.

Sunday 18th June: Our Club Polo

Again, this is open to all club paddlers. Another fun event with medals galore to be won, and you still might end up being Club Champion! More details soon.

Sunday 25th June: Brigg Marathon – Yorkshire Hasler Series Race 3

This is our home event in the Hasler series. A good turnout is required!!

Trailer Transport Fuel Costs

We had a great day at Malton & Norton Marathon so thanks to Neil Marley for organising it, and to Jim McCague for pulling the club trailer. We had 12 families represented at the event, most of which had a boat on the trailer, so can I suggest a voluntary contribution of £2 per family who attended to cover fuel costs?.

May 10
New for this year we are going to produce a “Class of 2017″ poster ready for xmas showing all our paddlers who have been with us this year.

There will be one for boys and one for girls. The boys are leading 27 to 26 so far! (but bearing in mind 8 of the “boys” are coaches you could say it’s 19 boys to 26 girls!

Below is who I have photographed up to now, but don’t worry if you are not on yet, I’ll get you soon! Please come and tell me if I have missed you out, and you have all year to get a photo you like, so if you want yours re-taking, just ask Martin Heywood!

May 2

I have uploaded several albums of brilliant photos taken by Rachel Marley to our Facebook page (click on icon below) from the moving water weekend. These feature several of our mainly younger members paddling through the “stopper” at Sleningford for the first time.

They have been sorted by Rachel by the paddlers name. I have tagged only the first photo of each set (and only those who I can tag). Please feel fee to tag the rest.

They will be loaded onto our website later, when I have finished sorting all the photos. (still a lot to go through!)

May 1
A few photos from this weekend are now on our Facebook page, but there are lots to sort this year so the rest will be on our Facebook page and website soon. If you have photos or videos you would like me to include please send me your email address and I will send you back a Dropbox link to upload them too. Alternatively, bring them to the river on a memory stick this Tuesday or Thursday. Please do a preliminary edit, removing blurred and duplicates.

We had another brilliant weekend at Tanfield with 38 paddlers on the water, including the coaches! Thanks to all who helped make this weekend a success: that is all the coaches, my caterers, family and Friends. and of course the paddlers. Below are two group photos I took to be looking at while I sort the rest, which may take some time!
