Please don’t forget our Fun Day on Sunday 12th June. We are running two events on the day. In the morning we have a Go-Canoeing session for the general public (10:00 to 12:00) and in the afternoon we have the Fun Day for club members and their families (12:30 to 4:00).

for the If you want BBQ food for the Fun Day, please add your requirements to the list in the boathouse (or reply to this email) by this Thursday evening. Cost of the BBQ is £3 per person (veggie option available). The fun event itself is free and you can have a go in ANY of our boats and try stand-up paddle board and the coracle.

And members 16 years old and under get a free goodie bag!!

On Sunday 22nd May we held our club sprint and slalom. A big thank you to Neil Marley and his team for designing and building the course this year. Thanks also to everyone else who helped put on this event, and to all you paddlers who raced and made it all worthwhile.

Flying the Flag for GSCC!

Well done to all our paddlers who competed in the Wagon Lane Slalom at Bradford during the weekend of 14th and 15th May:

Congratulations to Neil Marley (1st in mens Div 3 C1), Rebecca Selby (1st in ladies J16 Div 4 K1), Sian Mitchell (1st in Div 4 C2 with Julian Selby), Jamelia Snow and Caitlin Marley (1st ladies Div 4 C1). Not pictured, but also competing, were Julian Selby, Dan Snow, Frazer Doyle and Koren Doyle.

Do you want to try slalom?

Then come to our river this Sunday for our club slalom (and sprint) at 10:00am. it’s open to everyone, even if you have not tried slalom before, and you can paddle in your normal boat.

Don’t forget we now offer slalom training on a Tuesday evening at 7:10pm (after the regular Tuesday session) and this is also open to everyone. You will be taught the slalom basics on flat water and soon you’ll be ready to move onto moving water!

It is our:

Club Sprint and Slalom on

Sunday 22nd May

Starting at 10:00am!

  • Open to all, regardless of age and ability!
  • There will be refreshments afterwards, provided as ever by Jean.
  • A full day’s fun paddling at our boathouse on the River Ancholme
  • Sprint along a short straight course
  • Slalom around poles suspended over the river

We will hold the sprint in the morning, starting around 10:00 am, while we are setting up the slalom course

The slalom will start as soon as the course is ready, hopefully getting the first run in before lunch, and the second run in after lunch.

And don’t forget, there are certificates for the winners in lots of different age categories (and 2nd and third place too, if we get enough entries) and these events count towards our overall club champions for the year!

Don’t worry if you haven’t done this before, there will be plenty of coaches around to help you along!

Finally, help is appreciated in setting up the slalom course. We will be there from 8:30am!

Sprint:

For the sprint, you paddle as fast as you can over a short course, about 100m or 200m (we’ll decide the distance on the day depending on the weather). You take it in turns and we time you from start to finish and your best time counts (you get two goes). You can use the boat you normally paddle, or try one of our faster sprint boats (If you use one of these, to make it fair your time will not count towards the prizes, so perhaps do one run in each!). You can even enter in a two man boat or canoe as well as kayak!

Slalom:

For the slalom, you paddle as fast as you can over short course with lots of twists and turns. You have to paddle though “gates” which are two poles suspended from wires over the river. If you touch a pole or go through it the wrong way, you get time penalties added to you time! As with the sprint, you take it in turns and we time you from start to finish and your best time counts (again, you get two goes). You can still use the boat you normally paddle, or try one of our faster slalom boats (If you use one of these, to make it fair your time will not count towards the prizes, so perhaps do one run in each!). You can even enter in a two man boat or canoe as well as kayak!

May Day Bank holiday Weekend was our first moving water weekend of 2016. Thanks to all our paddlers who participated, to the parents who brought them and to our coaches who ensured they had a great time! Also thanks to Dan Snow for transporting some boats and kit in his van.
