Here’s what’s in this newsletter:

Kit for our Moving Water Weekend

If you have put your name on the list to borrow a boat and other equipment for this weekend, please remember to collect it after this Thursday’s river session.

If you cannot make it to the boathouse on Thursday, please contact us and we will TRY to make other arrangements, and if you are struggling to transport a boat one of our members has LIMITED space in his van and has offered to take some boats. Please contact us only if you have no other means of getting a boat to the venue.

IMPORTANT!! The venue have asked that a parent or responsible adult remains on site during our coached sessions. This is for their insurance purposes. GSCC will have contact details for next of kin for all paddlers, but we request that barring emergencies a parent or responsible adult does remain on site. Parents may take responsibility for a friend’s child, with that child’s parent’s agreement.

Please remember that although there is no charge from GSCC for equipment or coaching, there are river fees to be paid to the site management. These are to be paid directly to the site at their reception on arrival.

Discipline Coaching

Starting in May we are offering discipline coaching on Tuesday evenings immediately after the normal Tuesday session. This means the regular Tuesday session will continue to be from 6:00 to 7:00 and the discipline coaching will be 7:10 to 8:10. (our regular Thursday night sessions will move to a 6:30 start from May onward). We are offering coaching in sprint, marathon, slalom and polo and this is part of our long term plan to encourage the competitive aspect of our sport and to improve the river environment and facilities.

Cost of the sessions will be £5, but should a paddler be already on a regular GSCC coached session this fee will be reduced to £2.

Please support these sessions as we will be able to use them as evidence when we are submitting funding applications for the river project. To book your place (spaces are limited) please contact the bookings officer.

Ancholme River Festival Saturday 28th May

For the third year we are supporting the Ancholme River Festival in Brigg Market place and on the river at the rowing club boathouse. We will have the ergos in the market place and will be running a Go-Canoeing session throughout the day for beginners, so if you have any family or friends who want a go, this is for them! During the day you can also try rowing with our friends at the Ancholme Rowing Club, who’s facilities we will be using on the day.

HELP WANTED! We will require volunteers to help the coaches run these events, especially with the booking in and the ergos. Please contact Pete Keel (building@gscc-online.com) if you can help, and helpers get the first chance to grab a ticket for Glanford Boat Club’s hog roast in the evening!

On saturday 23rd April some of our members took part in a Division 3 and 4 slalom at Oughtibridge near Sheffield and did really well:

In  Div 4 women’s K1 Jamelia Snow came 1st, Rebecca Selby came 2nd and Anita Swiostek came 5th.
In Div 4 men’s k1 – Dan Snow came 1st
In Div 3 men’s k1 Julian Selbycame 16th
and in Div 3 women’s k1 Sian Mitchell came 12th

So well done to everyone. especially Jamelia, Rebecca and Dan, and also to Anita who was taking part in her first slalom and this was only her second go on moving water. Anita attended our Tanfield day last September, so watch out for our next trip so you too can learn the skills to try moving water slalom! We will also be having flat water slalom training on our river during the summer months and will be having our own club slalom event (date to follow soon).

Moving Water Weekend, Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May 2016

Our next moving water weekend is Saturday 30th September and Sunday 1st May 2016, starting at 10:30 am. at Sleningford Mill, River Ure, North Yorkshire.

There is no cost to club members for the coaching or the use of club kit (first-come-first-served for kit), other than your fuel costs and any accommodation costs. It is just over an hours drive from Scunthorpe, so it can be done as a day trip.

This is the same venue as the event we ran last Easter, which was really popular. You can see photos here and here showing the venue and the fun we had!

We sometimes call this a whitewater day, and you may hear the coaches saying that, but please do not be put off by the word “whitewater”! This day is open to all paddlers who are comfortable wearing a spraydeck and have demonstrated they can capsize wearing one. Please talk to a coach if you are unsure of your, or your child’s, suitability to attend. Please note also that this river can rise quickly after heavy rain in which case it can be unsuitable for beginners, so we cannot guarantee that you will be able to paddle (though usually the problem is not enough water!). It is at the coaches discretion whether paddling will take place or not and their decision is final.

If you are going, why not make a weekend of it? Sleningford Mill is a caravan and campsite right next to the moving water section of the river. Some of us will be going up Friday night and leaving Monday morning (no club paddling on Monday though), so book a pitch now! Please book your pitch direct with the campsite: www.sleningfordwatermill.co.uk STOP PRESS: The site may be full for electric pitches. Non electric MAY be still available.

And finally, if you are attending, please remember to add your name to the list in our boathouse and tick the box for any club kit you wish to borrow. It is the borrower’s responsibility to transport the kit they borrow, including boats, to the venue (or arrange the transport of it).

Moving Water Weekend Accommodation

If Sleningford campsite is full, or camping is not for you, Martin Heywood has a two bedroom river side apartment in West Tanfield village (short drive of 30 min walk away), booked for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

One room (a double) is still available, at £145 per room for the three nights, = £48.33 per night. (The Bull Inn is £75 per night for a double and the Bruce Arms £90 per night for a double, so good value). If you want the room please contact Martin on 07739 326607
