We are now taking bookings for our River Sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in April. The first Tuesday session is April 5th and the first Thursday session is April 7th. These sessions are only for existing members who have been paddling with us through the winter or last summer. Due to the cold water temperatures they are not for complete beginners (Beginners can start with us in May)

During the sessions you will be working towards Paddlepower passport and Discovery for youngsters and British Canoeing Star Awards for adults, in kayak and canoe. There may also be the opportunity to try specific disciplines like sprint and polo.

For both nights we meet at the boathouse at 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start on the river and the session will finish at 7:00pm.

Sessions are booked by the calendar month and the cost is £5 per person per session. We ask that you pay for the full month in advance, so with April being a four week month, that is £20.

New for this year: If you can’t make one of the sessions that you have pre-paid for, let us know 24 hours in advance and you will be credited for the next available session!

To book your place, please see the booking officer at the pool on Saturday night, or phone the bookings officer on 07444 050100 and leave a message.

Warm clothing will be needed on the river, depending on the weather. It is best to avoid wearing cotton as it makes you cold when wet. Synthetic materials are preferable such as fleeces or polyester. A cagoule should also be worn to reduce wind chill, and also a warm hat. Paddlers must wear something on their feet (old trainers, sandals or plimsolls) to stop bare feet coming into contact with dangerous items on the riverbank or in the water.

You will also need to bring a towel and a dry change of clothes as it is likely you will get wet at some point! We have segregated changing facilities, but no showers. You are welcome to change in the Leisure Centre if you wish.

See you on the river!

Saturday 30th April & Sunday 1st May

An Introduction to moving water

We are having our first weekend away of 2016 this May Day Bank Holiday weekend! The venue is the River Ure at Sleningford Mill Caravan and Camp Site, North Stainley, Ripon, North Yorkshire. This caravan and camping site is right on the river bank and we have full access to the river all weekend! Why not book in for Friday and stay for Bank holiday Monday?

This weekend is open to all, that is those who have paddled with us previously, and those newcomers who have attended the pool sessions this winter. The river caters for all abilities, with a still pool at the bottom of the site, gentle rapids and a slightly more difficult section for paddlers with a little more experience.

Please note however, that the River Ure has a large catchment area and can rise to high and fast levels, so we reserve the right to cancel any or all of the sessions, for some or all of the paddlers. The senior coaches will assess the river and make this decision on the day.

Should the river be in spate, there is a canal in Ripon we can paddle on, or there is always Lightwater Valley fun park which is only a few miles away!
