We had a brilliant turnout today of 20 paddlers for the Pennine CRC Calder Hasler Marathon at Mirfield near Huddersfield today (Sunday 15th Oct)  We had some great results which should help our overall Hasler standing. We don’t have the official results or times yet, but we think:

Div 8 K1: Tom Shoulder 1st, Julian Selby 2nd
Div 9 K1: Kev Lovett 2nd
Div 9 C2: Jim McCauge & Dan Snow 1st
Div 9 K2: Caitlin Marley & Nicole Allison 1st, Rebecca Selby & Hannah Senior 2nd, Alisha Hedison & Nikki Broughton 3rd
Lightnings U12 Girls: Ellie Beedham 1st, Issy Parker 2nd, Ellen Woodward 3rd
Lightnings U10 Girls: Annabel Taylor 1st.

We apologise if we have made any errors or missed anyone out.

Do you want to get involved in marathon racing?

We want to build on this years success so we need more U12′s (as our current U12′s have to move up to the adult divisions in 2018). We also welcome any new U10′s and any new over 12′s of course.

The Hasler series takes a winter break now, starting again in April with our own Brigg Marathon. The winter months make it difficult to introduce paddlers to marathon boats, but if we get any relatively mild weekends between now and April we hope to have some outdoor sessions, and as previously announced, we are having Tuesday evening sessions on the river during October.

If you or your children would like to try marathon racing (or slalom racing) please express an interest by emailing our coaching officer Neil Marley, at coaching@gscc-online.com or leave a comment on this message on our Facebook page and we will be in touch with dates for winter training.

We have a couple of updates to make to our pool update. The changes are in red below.

Dress Code

Please remember to wear a swimming costume and tee shirt and shorts when participating in one of our pool sessions. This applies to boys and girls, children and adults. This saves any potential embarrassment! Thanks for your cooperation.

All children under sixteen (not 18) participating in one of our pool sessions (or river session) must have a parent or guardian staying in attendance. The guardian can be a designated other parent (obviously with their consent). Please do not drop off your children and leave them unattended.

Social Night

Because the pool is over subscribed, it may be a month or even two before to get to see your friend in the club. Why not pop down to the pool on Saturday night when you are not paddling? We can congregate in the cafe area for a chat (They’ve a nice new coffee machine) or sit and watch the sessions or even swim in the small pool (still open to the public. Leisure Centre charges apply, I think). Maybe even a trip to the pup after!

Clarification on pool bookings:

  • We are now taking bookings for December. Members who have not paddled yet will come before those that have already done so in October.
  • Bookings for January will open in mid November. More details will be announced later.

To book, please do so personally at the pool during one of our sessions (Saturday evening from 5:00pm)

Slalom News

Another great day on the Slalom trail on Saturday at Darley Abbey near Derby, a great location and nice friendly run div3/4 event.

Hannah Senior and Jamelia Snow both paddled, with this been Hannah’s first big event after been promoted to div 3 last weekend. The course was quite big with some fast flows and difficult eddy lines in places but both did great.

Two excellent runs from Jamelia Snow saw her take 1st place and promotion to div 2. Well done Jamelia!

Marathon News

Some of our Hasler marathon paddlers competed at Lincoln Hasler on Sunday. This was more of a training day as Lincoln is outside our region so we didn’t score any points, but it does count as one of the three qualifying races a paddler needs to have done if he/she wants to compete in next years final.

Ellie Beedham got a good second place in the Lightning class U12 girls, and we tried a new K2 pairing of Nicole Allison and Caitlin Marley.

Boat News

We’ve bought a second hand K2 to add to our  fleet, so that makes 3!

Discipline Training News

Are you inspired by our slalom and marathon success to have a go? For the next four Tuesdays in October, starting on the 10th, we will be having discipline training on the river, in slalom and marathon. Please note we still have only a limited number of racing boats and our current racers will be training, so your time in a racing boat may be restricted, but we do really want to encourage other members to have a go. (Don’t forget we will be getting eight new marathon boats very soon thanks to the Sport England Grant).

The only pre-requisites are that you are at one star or passport standard, don’t mind getting wet and have suitable clothing for the weather..

We will be on the water at 6:30 prompt due to the failing light (earlier if people are ready) so please be at the boathouse for 6:00pm

It’s not just marathon that our paddlers are having success in. Hannah Senior was promoted to K1 slalom div 3 after finishing top of the div 4 table during Saturday’s Oughtibridge slalom in her debut slalom event.

Tom Shoulder also showed great strength however the competition in div 3 K1 mens was quite vast so a mid table result was very respectable.

Jamelia was an official judge for the day however showed no bias towards GSCC paddlers!
