The date of our Annual General Meeting has changed:

It is now Monday 19th February 2018

It is still at 6:30 pm in the Garden Room,
Scawby Village Hall

This is because the original date fell during North Lincolnshire’s half term holiday. We apologies for any confusing or inconvenience.

You are invited to attend our Annual General Meeting on 19th February 2018 (6:30pm in the Garden Room, Scawby Village Hall).

This is an important event in our calendar where you can have your say in how your club is run and who runs it! Please try and attend!
  • Do you want to be more involved and help run our club? Now is your chance as some committee posts and all sub group representative posts are up for re-election. More details on the positions available and how to be nominated are below.
  • Perhaps you have some ideas on how we can do things better, or have a new idea you want to be discussed and considered by the Management committee? Then submit a motion for discussion at the AGM. More details can also be found below.
ELECTION OF OFFICIALS

We are inviting nominations for only those Management Committee and Sub Group Representative positions listed below. All posts are for two years starting in February 2018. Anyone wishing to put their name forward for any of the posts should download a nomination form (click here) and return the slip to the Secretary or Chairman by email, or to the Membership Officer at the pool by hand, by 14thJanuary 2018. Proposer and one Seconder must be over 18.

Management Committee Positions for Re-election:

Coaching Officer
Publicity Officer
Disciplines Officer
Buildings and Equipment Officer
New Position this year:  A non-coaching member.
This position has been created because the committee believe there is an imbalance of coaches vs non-coaches on the committee and therefore coaches need to be challenged/questioned more on future proposals.

Sub Group Representative Positions for Re-election:

Slalom (overseen by Disciplines Officer)
Sprint/Marathon (overseen by Disciplines Officer)
Canoe Polo (overseen by Disciplines Officer)
Paddlers/Youth (overseen by Welfare Officer)
Paddle-ability Rep (New role overseen by Welfare Officer)

  • The following posts are not up for re-election until February 2019: Company Secretary, Treasurer, Membership, Fundraising, two off Committee Positions Without Portfolio, Safety & Trips.
  • The Chairman is elected by the committee at the first meeting after the AGM
  • The Company Secretary does not have any voting rights at meetings.
  • GSCC is a Limited company by guarantee and so all successful nominees will have to meet the company law criteria, though do not necessarily need to become directors of the company.
  • For details of Management Committee roles, see the club’s Model Articles, Constitution & Club Rules CASC 2017, which can be downloaded off our website by clicking here.
MOTION PROPOSALS

Anyone wishing to propose a motion for discussion at the AGM please download a proposal form (click here) and return to the Secretary or Chairman by email, or to the Membership Officer at the pool by hand, by 14th January 2018.  Proposer and two Seconders must be over 18.

New Year’s Day Paddle Cancelled

We must apologies for any inconvenience caused by the late cancellation of today’s New Year’s Day Paddle. We were aware that an Environment Agency “Strong Stream Advice” notice was still in force, but the actual flows during such a notice vary depending on the state of the tides in the Humber and to whether the sluice gates at South Ferriby were closed or open. In view of this we decided not to cancel earlier and instead we conducted a point-of-paddle risk assessment prior to the start of the paddle.

This was conducted by our Coaching Officer Neil Marley and 2 of our senior coaches Julian Selby and Jim McCague. It was evident there was a very strong flow south to north and a canoe was launched to gauge the actual state of the river. Whilst many of our members would have been able to cope with the flow, some of the younger and less experienced ones may have struggled with it, so it was decided to cancel the event.  On an “open-to-all” club event such as this it is not fair allow some to paddle and some to not.

We hope you understand this was a very difficult decision to take as we had over 25 paddlers kitted up, but in the interests of everyone’s well being we thought it the correct decision.

Night Training is Tuesday and Thursday this week.

6:30 pm ON THE WATER TRAINING and/or INSIDE TRAINING (so meet at 6:00 pm at the latest). Please note that there is a possibility that the river may still flowing too fast so it is likely to be indoor training only on Tuesday.

Important: As usual, please note that:

  • We must restrict the training to those who are capable of paddling solo or in a canoe pair around the island (3 miles) in under one hour. If you are unsure of your suitability for night training please contact Neil on coaching@gscc-online.com of post a message on our Facebook event page.
  • Paddlers must  have the appropriate clothing for the weather conditions.
  • Paddlers must be wearing a head torch.
  • We must also limit the number of boats to suit the number of coaches, which may only be Neil some weeks, so if possible please let Neil know that you intend to paddle on our Facebook Event page.
  • If the weather is too bad to paddle, or we do not have the correct coach-to-paddler ratio, we may do indoor training instead.
  • There will be a small charge (£2).
  • Night training is subject to change or cancellation due to the weather or unavailability of the required coaches, so please “like” our facebook page to ensure you get the very latest news on any changes. Go to www.facebook.com/FriendsofGSCC. Members on our mailing list should also get late notifications, but it is not always possible to update the website at short notice.

Our New Year Paddle this year is on New Year’s Day itself due to the next day being a work day for most of us.

We will meet at our boathouse at 2:00pm for a 2:30 pm start. Warm clothing and hat recommended!

As can be  seen below we had a really good turnout last year. Can we beat it this year?!

The Class of 2017 posters can now be downloaded by clicking here.

They will print easily at A3 size. Asda do 10″x8″  (nearly A4) on photo paper for £1.50.

The posters cover MOST of our paddlers from the summer river season. Unfortunately I did not photograph everyone, so I apologise if you are missing. (I did ask people to send in photos of missing people in an email in November but did I not receive any).
