Marathon Update
As the weather (and water) warm up it is nice to see some new faces taking to Pointy Boats (Marathon and Sprint). In recent weeks we have welcomed Jemima S, Toby C, Mike N and Koren D.
Jemima and Mike have both progressed to Wing paddles, Toby has had a couple of sessions in Lightning and, on Tuesday, Koren successfully paddled a Polypippin all the way to the pumping station. We hope that some of these new paddlers will be ready to join the racing squad when the new competitive season starts in September. This year the squad visited Malton and Barmby on the Derwent, Manvers, Nottingham, South Lakes (Lancashire) and the Hasler Finals in Worcester as well as racing on our home waters at Brigg. We will all be off to Richmond on Thames in the autumn for this years Finals.
Pointy boats give you the opportunity to travel further for less effort and Koren commented that she saw a stretch of the Ancholme that she has never visited in all her years of paddling at GSCC. At the end of the session she tried one of our more technical racing boats and joined Craig in the SWIMATHON club before she even left the jetty (a bit more work needed – I think).
Yesterday (23rd July) the squad were all keen to demonstrate their skills to the visiting cameraman from The Sun. Michelle gave a long interview to camera and then Declan (with all his medals) was interviewed before we started paddling. The reporters stayed around to film throughout our paddling session. Hopefully some of the footage of our racing squad will make it into the final cut which is expected to be about 60 seconds!!
If you would like to give Pointy Boats a try why not join us for a session on Tuesday or just ask for a short one-to-one session on a Thursday.
