Nottingham Hasler Report & Results
Nine of our intrepid marathon squad attended the Nottingham Hasler on Sunday 21st April to gain experience with bigger numbers of competitors on a big river (The Trent). The day was dry but windy which made for interesting paddling conditions as the current was against the wind which caused the swell to increase.
The first race saw Matilda and Oscar competing in Geoff Sanders Div A. Both made a cracking start and were ahead of the field after 50 metres. Clearly all the sprinting practice they have been doing paid off. However, they lost ground during the multiple turns around bridges. Oscar was just beaten by one second by a paddler with local knowledge and Matilda came in a few seconds later in third place. More practice needed on the turns I think!
Declan was our only competitor in Div B and, despite being in a shorter boat than some of the others, raced valiantly to gain second place.
Charles and Connor raced in Div 6 (8 miles) and handled the weather conditions well. Connor came in two places ahead of Charles and gained a prize for the highest placed junior paddler.
Andrew was our sole representative in Div 8 (4 miles) and battled through the wind and waves to achieve a creditable finish.
John represented the club in Div 9 (4 miles) and nobly kept the tale end marshal company throughout the race.
Sue and Graham took their C2 out in Div 8 doubles (4 miles) and were well beaten by the K2’s in the race but still felt they had a good race.
Thanks to parents who supported and especially Francis for taking loads of photos (click here).
We came away with 4 prizes – which is a pretty good haul for 9 paddlers. Well done everyone!
