The final Regional Marathon for this season!

Derwent – Mike Jones Memorial Marathon

19th June 2022

The Hasler Marathon season finishes at the end of August and the last race in our region is coming up.  Although it is on the Derwent (like Malton) it is a different kettle of fish being just before the Derwent joins the Ouse– wide river and very little flow.

This will be the last local event for you to a) gain racing experience b) possibly earn promotion c) represent YOUR club and d) complete your third race to qualify for the Hasler Finals at Runnymede in the autumn.

If you haven’t got three races yet you could still go “out of region” to another event to make sure you qualify.

Kingston Kayak Club are organising the event and, as usual, we will be putting in a team entry. Sue and Graham will miss this one but Neil has agreed to be team leader and to tow the trailer if necessary.

Kingston have provided the following information

The start and the control point will be at the Tidal Barrage, Barmby on the Marsh, Near Howden East Yorkshire DN14 7HX. There is a picnic site and free car parking available at the Barrage, please be considerate of other users of this venue when parking. If you require designated parking for this event please contact the Event Organiser in advance. SatNav – make sure it takes you to the Howden side of the river NOT the Goole side. The River Derwent in generally slow flowing with meanders but wind may be an issue. There are no local shops in the vicinity but the pub may be open.

Anyone without British Canoeing membership will be able to enter as an Associate Club member if they provide me with the following information.

Name, gender, date of birth, email address and postcode.  Juniors or youth paddlers also need to make sure I have parental/guardian permission.

Come along on Tuesday evenings to give marathon paddling a try.  You could be our next medal winner!
